You can tie the brushes back with the string, and either tie
the strings though the end bell attachment screw holes or tape the the
strings to the outside of the end bell.
When you are reasonably certain that the brushes are most of the
way over the commutator, cut the strings. What remains inside attached
to the brush braid will cause no issues.

They are a lot less exciting to assemble than the permanent

Inspect the brush holder assembly carefully. Many of these left the
plant with the rivet securing one connection loose. Burn, fry, not
GOOD.Also the screw securing the brush braid to it's terminal is
sometimes found loose. Polish those surfaces to brightness, then
re-secure.
