That should be no problem. The only place the number of strands makes a difference electrically is if you are dealing with high frequencies. In that case the skin depth of the frequencies involved come into play and the more stands the lower the resistance until the skin depth approaches the wire size. As far as the tractor and Alltrax is concerned you are dealing with DC.

Now I am debating whether to try crimp lugs or solder. Crimp
seems iffy without the expensive proper crimper. I assume that solder is just a
propane torch and some big fat solder wire. Any practical comments or
experience?

I have used in the past a cheap hammer powered crimping device. Unfortunately I don't know where to get them.
