(ET) Battery washing

Yesterday I took off the snow thrower and put the mower deck back on.  then I took the E20 back to the garage and plugged the charger in,  Nothing happened!  I took it apart and found the plug between the timer and transformer had a burned contact. (About the only thing I did not change when I rebuilt the tractor.)  Those things will come back  and get you!

I also found the charger cover/battery separator (the perforated metal piece) was corroded where it comes in contact with the front battery.  This is the second time in 2 years.  It creates a lot of white powder that gets all over the charger parts, and starts to corrode them.

How often do I need to clean the tops of the batteries?

How do I keep the charger from getting wet when I clean the batteries?

Should I take the batteries out of the tractor?

Since I had,   A PWM lift motor controller,   A Landis charger controller,   The original charger timer,   A relay  circuit to switch automatically from the Landis to the timer ,   And a LED headlight resistor circuit,   all under that cover.   I think I am going to change things around so I can get to them easier.

Does anyone know what the color of the corrosion on the battery connections mean?  Two of my terminals turn yellow, three get a gray powder, and the rest stay clean.  All the terminals are the same material and age.
