I've seen brush holders corrode from moisture in my garage and barn during 
winter storage.  This caused the brushes to bind.

I suppose something similar - say, rust on the inside of the motor 
housings -
 could be causing your magnets to break loose from the housings.

I've been wondering for a while how practical it would be to adapt motors 
from 36v push mowers for ET decks.  Examples:

I'd be surprised if these motors were as stout and sturdy as the original 
GE 
motors.
