I keep the plate by your toes off or use plexi glass cover.
Light discourages mice from nesting. I have not done this to the section
that houses the key switch yet.
Also moth balls. In our local hardware store they have a large moth puck
that you can hang on a closet pole.
I hang one in the wiring.
The only down side is: It sometimes smell like a public toilet.
