Re: (ET) New tires for steering

In the past there have been several posts relating to skipping or very sloppy sector gears. I recall there being discussion about using an electrical box snap out plug to make a spacer that helped eliminate the steering slop. This is, apparently, a chronic fault with ETs juding from the frequency with which it surfaces. 
Looking in my mail file, I found this from Chris Zach in 2005:
"Ok, so as you all know I had the really lousy steering. Skips, all that sort of thing. I had a nice big home deopt washer in there with the cotter pin, hardly any play at all.
Well, I ordered a steering gear and shaft from Harold. He included a set of washers as well. Before taking off the old shaft I thought I would try the washers. Perfect snug fit they made with a new cotter pin.
And my steering is now perfect. No skips, no play, no problem. I highly recommend new washers, and pick up a spare shaft while you're at it. They may come in handy someday. "

    I've noticed that my Elec-trak E20 *stinks* in terms of steering.
    Put a
    load on the end of the front lift and the sector gear skips, but

    the point it is almost impossible to steer . Likewise the rear tires
    don't have much grab to speak of.

    Is this possibly because I have old tires? Maybe they are stiff and
    crummy. Would new tires make steering with loads easier, or is
    this just
