Re: (ET) Help, reverse missing?

E12's are different from E15's: On an E12 the field stays constant while the armature polarity changes by the 4 big contactors. On the E15 they change the direction of the field with a little relay which gets blown up.

Bad idea.

I'm guessing the problem is one of the two diodes that powers the field is blown. The E12 has a little tiny board with two diodes in there that go to the field and provide power going forward and reverse. If one fails you lose field in either forward or reverse.

Way to test: If you can put it in neutral, floor it, then see if the motor turns while pegging the amp meter. If so check those diodes.

E20's have 4 diodes on card 4.

I'm with Joe. Last time *my* E-15 lost reverse it was because the reverse relay contacts had FUSED. That'll be from injudicious rate of change from forward to reverse (or is it vice-versa?) Anyway, I happened to have a spare relay from which to take a contact "stack" and replace the one I wrecked. I've been a much more careful direction-changer ever since.

By the way, if the relay looks ok, follow the coil wire back to Card #1 and check that the edge connector connection is ok... that's a notorious point of failure. Er, that is, if the E-12 has similar wiring.

In any case, good luck!

E-15 with a Craftsman plow, E-20 with a 40" thrower, and I think the plow is a miracle worker!

    Mike,

It appears to be an issue with the reversing relay. When mine
quit working I looked for a 36V relay but couldn't find one so I
used a 24V heavy duty relay with a dropping resistor in series with
the coil and it has worked great ever since. I have an E-15, but
I'm guessing the reverse relay is very similar. You might also want
to verify that the switch controlling the relay is good – mine has a
small arm that is depressed by the speed control lever when you put
    it in reverse.

I was using my E12 with a 36" snowblower to clear our driveway this
afternoon. I had about 10sqft left to clear and reverse stopped
    working.

All the forward speeds worked fine. There was plenty of
charge. I could hear what sounded like a relay clunking when I
moved the lever to the reverse. But no motion, and the fuel
    guage/usage meters didn't move.

So I kept going from off to reverse, off to reverse until I got it
to move backwards. Coincidently one of the chains had fallen off
the rear tire. So I backed it into the garage and put the chain
on. I was going to just put it away but I tested reverse a couple
of times in the garage and it seemed to work. So I went back
out. As soon as I needed reverse it wouldn't work again.

This time I kept flicking the switch until it went into reverse and
    parked it in the garage.

Once it was in the garage I put the gear into neutral and tested.

    Forward speeds work

    Reverse doesn't (mostly)

How do I fix this, or where do I begin my search?

    Thanks.
