Re: (ET) Help, reverse missing?

The only relays you would hear would be the two RTN relays, one for the traction motor, the other for the PTO control.

Let's turn to Page 4-18 of the HSM for details. This provides locations and wire call-outs.

The first thing I would check is the integrity of the FWD / REV control circuit. If memory serves correctly switching is done on the + side of the circuit.

With the voltmeter of your choice, secure the - lead to the corresponding terminal on the battery pack. Secure the transaxle in Neutral, and securely block the drive wheels. For testing purposes ONLY secure or bypass the seat RTN switch.

After opening the control cabinet, locate Wire 14-01 (Forward) and Wire 41-01 (Reverse) .  These are found on the double contactors.

You've probably already figured out what's next. <G>

Attach the + lead of the voltmeter of your choice to the wire / circuit you wish to prove out. Operate the FWD/ REV switch and throttle until the failure presents itself. If you observe voltage absent on Wire 41-01, you would suspect the F/R switch or wiring. If voltage is present there suspect the contactors.
I know, you will want to know which one. And we can figure it out. But take it from someone that has fought this battle in cold damp garages and parking lots more than once. If you replace just ONE, you will get to replace the OTHER in the not too distant future.

Yes I have the HSM.    This is my first foray into the control system of the tractor.   I have done some work on the charger and the steering.   If it is the armature reversing contactors where are they located?

I hear a clicking when I move it into reverse.  Which to me sounds like a relay but I could be wrong

If you hear contactor action, and have no Reverse, I would suspect the armature reversing contactors.Sometimes the copper contacts will recede into the nylon bushings that insulate them from the contactor's metal housing.

Do you have a Homeowner's Service Manual ?

        What flavor of E-12?  E-12 'S' AA & BA, {Ones most likely to suffer this malady} , the E-12 CA to HA[Includes E-12 M .], or the E-12 JA ?

That information will help me help you.  :)

Subject: (ET) Help, reverse missing?

I was using my E12 with a 36? snowblower to clear our driveway this afternoon.   I had about 10sqft left to clear and reverse stopped working.

All the forward speeds worked fine.    There was plenty of charge.    I could hear what sounded like a relay clunking when I moved the lever to the reverse.   But no motion, and the fuel gauge/usage meters didn?t move.

So I kept going from off to reverse, off to reverse until I got it to move backwards.    Coincidently one of the chains had fallen off the rear tire.   So I backed it into the garage and put the chain on.    I was going to just put it away but I tested reverse a couple of times in the garage and it seemed to work.    So I went back out.    As soon as I needed reverse it wouldn?t work again.

This time I kept flicking the switch until it went into reverse and parked it in the garage.

Once it was in the garage I put the gear into neutral and tested.

Forward speeds work

Reverse doesn?t (mostly)

How do I fix this, or where do I begin my search?

Thanks.

Mike
