Correct. Though I do believe it has a small compound winding in there to 
keep it from spinning to infinity if the chain skips. I know this to be 
the case because I also have a tiller which has the same motor. When the 
belt slips it spins but does not self-destruct.

Not correct. It uses the big mower contactor. However there is no brake 
due to the lack of it being a PM motor.

And yes, it throws a voltage surge when shut down. I can see
