Harry's controller doesn't really follow *any* manufacturer's charging 
recommendations for *any* kind of service.  AFAIK, it is entirely unique.  
I've never heard of any other charge controller using that scheme.

I think that the main causes of cell shorting are (1) an accumulation of 
sulfate crystals in the bottom of the cell until the sulfate touches the 
grids, and (2) damage to the separators.  Sulfation is caused by chronic 
undercharging.  I don't know what causes separator damage.
