Re: (ET) Front edge of mower deck bends inward

Hm. I think that's the kind of deck I have. Pretty much indestructible; I did have one of the shocks rip the support out, but a bit of welding and some new plates made it right as rain.

I have had problems with the later decks bending in as well. Not because it was weak or rusted thin, but because it lacked the front roller that the older decks had. I have some areas of the lawn that are quite rough and if you cut low and had one of the casters fall into a hole the front lip would act as a grader blade and wanted to dig deeper because of its shape. If you were lucky the ground just scraped away after compressing the shocks and you kept going. If you were unlucky it would stop you in your tracks. I had the same thing happen on crowned areas of the lawn, like when going in and out of ditches. That got real old so I welded a roller on and the problem went away. The best deck for me was one of the oldest (I believe). Front roller, welded handle for tipping up the deck, angle iron deck bracing, and cast aluminum caster brackets instead of the cheaper stamped stuff.

Sounds as if your whole deck, all the metal has rusted thinner from
staying on wet ground outdoors without being painted to protect it. Bending is not normal on these decks they were built stronger than
regular gas tractor decks when new. Yes, you could reinforce it but
afterwards, clean the inside good and protect it. Several good ways some
people, after rust priming, are using pickup truck bed liner. Others are
using POR.

To keep front edge from bending inward ,I plan on laying a angle iron across the top ,right along the side discharge,then at 90* welding another piece straight down to hold the the front edge from bending in.Is there a better way ? Should I weld the angle iron to the mower deck ,or bolt it down? If I weld it ,will the welding cause it to rust threw quicker? The front wheel brackets need some additional support also.What can I do about that? Please give me some advice.
