Main point is that hydrogen is not a fuel, it's an energy carrier.  You 
put 
energy in and you get a fraction of it out (it's not that efficient).  You 
still have to get the energy somewhere, either from a primary fuel such as 
petroleum or from a renewable source.

If you're talking electricity, it's hard to beat the efficiency of 
transmitting it with wires and storing it in batteries.  Of course, the 
oil 
companies don't own the wires, which probably annoys them.  (However, 
Chevron DOES own the rights to nickel metal hydride batteries, and they 
won't license anyone to produce EV-sized batteries, FWIW.)
