Re: (ET) hot motor

Thanks. How do I tell if the orientation is screwed up on an E12M deck motor, and how do I unscrew it?

thanks again,

Steve

Permanent magnet motor? {I'm getting in a rut, aren't I ? } The field poles have to have a particular alignment in relation to the brush location on the commutator.Torque can be biased to be increased in one direction of rotation, lessened in the other. Ever notice how a cordless drill has more torque going 'forward' than in reverse? That's why. If the orientation is screwed up, you can end up with an armature that uses gobs of amps......and turns most of them into heat.
The same thing can be done to a wound field motor.

Can you explain this a little more clearly? I have a similar problem - a motor (on an E12M) that runs, but gets hot. A local motor shop checked it and said that things seemed fine.

Permanent magnet motor ? If so, did you mark the brush end bell
orientation before disassembly? If not, that could be the culprit. The GE
and made for GE motors have tabs and slots to prevent this. Just a
thought.................

Lets see if this one bounces !!

I just pulled one of the mower motors from the JD, it was running "weak"
andgot hot enough to burn off one of the motor terminal wires at the
chassis connector [;-[ It seems to spin over ok by hand, I put in a
new lower bearing this spring (the old one was getting noisy) and hope I
got it together right - it has been running weak since then but sees to
by slowly dying.
Any thoughts as to what I could look for or what i may have screwed
up, it had been ok before the teardown.
