On my JD's, the key switch turns the drive motor on - the clutch has to 
be depressed to allow the motor to start (safety lockout).  A second 
switch controls the mower motors, momentary on to start, shorted 
armature when turned off (quick stop - again momentary)  If you turn off 
the key when the mowers are running they spin down slowley.

Chris, is that one of the "double" contactors that's getting hot, I may 
have one off the strippers.
