Re: (ET) mower motor voltages

Mmm.... That could work. Problem is twofold though:

1) If the motor is 12 volts, you need three times the current to equal a 36 volt motor. Wire sizes will go up fast as you're drawing more current. Take a look at some wiring load capacity charts in the NEC for some thoughts.

2) That said, you could share some common wires, but they would be carrying double current, so they would have to be even *bigger*.

I wonder if a real winner would be to put a 120 volt inverter in the tractor and run 3 motors in parallel 120 volts. 36-120 can be done, and the efficiency loss on the inverter would probably be similar to the losses through wires. Bonus is no more brushes, and everyone in the universe makes 120 volt AC motors. And you could use the existing wiring harness and get 120 volts out of the tractor in the bargain for... well, anything.

Problem solved.

That's REALLY clever. Interesting fuse and control requirements, but well
worth the complication.

Here's an idea to run 3 12V motors on a 36V pack - connect each motor
across 2 of the batteries. Each pair of 2 batteries is 12V and runs one
mower motor. You would need a separate contactor for each motor. It
should be a pretty well balanced load, and if one stalls, no effect on the
other 2,
