I agree with Christopher; it all depends on usage:
If you will be mowing 1/2 acre or less, get a pair of used batteries.
I found a source that will show you a live test and sell at $25 each;
others have told me of prices of $15 each. New batteries start at places
like SAM's club around $42 plus tax and federal excise tax. IF a pair of
batteries don't do the job after, say, 2 uses, get another 4 to match and
be done with it. I mow about 2 acres and although all my batteries were
bought new, they were all bought in pairs, and do not all match. 2 are
220 Amp-hour, 4 are 215 Amp-hour. They are 5 years old (the oldest pair)
and the others are 6 months newer. They still do the job. If you want to
mow 3 acres, you need a set, and probably the best batteries you can find.
For extended tilling, like I am doing now, I suggest a full set of good
batteries.

I'd say it would depend on your expected usage. If the machine
will get occasional light usage, with some extended storage periods,
used batteries may work just fine for you. If you plan on consistent
and/or heavy usage, might as well spring for the quality/longevity.
