Re: (ET) Jackrabbit starts.

I have overhauled three of the Peerless 2318 transaxles and one of the 1216 transaxles found in the small frame tractors.

Suffice it to say they can be an adventure. Corrosion being the first battle to be fought in order to disassemble them.

I have the service information that was provided by Bill Gunn. The whole nine yards is a 48,144 KB PDF.

You WILL need an oxy-acetylene torch and you WILL need a large press.

Those flanges are resistant to leaving their homes. Figure on some brake caliper and rotor adventures also.

The case halves will need the faces flat sanded to prevent leakage, as cast iron shrinks and warps as it ages.

There are also some things to do the keep the flat Torrington ® bearings in the final drive on the axle shafts-differential side gears from becoming Claymores. :)

Let me know if I can help.

I have an E15 that has been giving me quite a jolt when start up.   Eventually, I noticed that it only did it when I switched directions.   (fwd to rev and rev to fwd)   Further inspection revealed that it takes about 27 revolutions for the motor to take up all the slack in the transmission.   I also have a E20, and it's not like this, so I know that this is not normal.

I'm guessing the transmission is toast, but just curious if anyone has seen anything like this.   If I had to guess, I'd say that all the rollers have fallen out of one or more bearings in the transmission, and that a shaft is moving back and forth, but still leaving the gears, more or less, engaged.  (assuming the transmission even has roller bearings.)   Thoughts?
