(ET) Jackrabbit starts.

I have an E15 that has been giving me quite a jolt when start up.   Eventually, I noticed that it only did it when I switched directions.   (fwd to rev and rev to fwd)   Further inspection revealed that it takes about 27 revolutions for the motor to take up all the slack in the transmission.   I also have a E20, and it's not like this, so I know that this is not normal.

I'm guessing the transmission is toast, but just curious if anyone has seen anything like this.   If I had to guess, I'd say that all the rollers have fallen out of one or more bearings in the transmission, and that a shaft is moving back and forth, but still leaving the gears, more or less, engaged.  (assuming the transmission even has roller bearings.)   Thoughts?
