Larry, is that with regular flooded lead-acid batteries? I thought fully 
charged flooded lead acid 6 volt batteries topped out at 6.37 volts 
(that's what everything I find online says), which would put a 6 battery 
pack at 38.2 volts. When I measured mine last week when the batteries were 
probably about 80% charged, each battery was reading around 6.25 volts, 
and the entire pack was around 37.3 volts. I should measure them tonight, 
since they should be as charged as I can get them now. 

Do other people have similar voltages to Larry?

I just measured the battery voltage on my E15, fully charged.
Measuring across the tops of fuses F2 and F3 gave 39.1v with nothing
happening and 37.5v with the mower deck running.  (The deck motors
were rebuilt last fall, so they are probably drawing less current
than motors with worn bearings.)

Running the drive motor gave 37.5v (+/- .2v) in each of the first 4
electric speeds.  This was with the gearbox in neutral.
