Thanks David (and Charlie).

I do have a Homeowner's Service Manual - just need to dig it out of my 
shed. :)

So I'm guessing there are two wires that go to the switch, and the PO just 
connected those two wires together to bypass it. Hopefully that's the case 
- that would be the easiest fix. Just disconnect them from each other and 
re-connect to the switch. If he added a bypass in somewhere else, that 
will be a pain - I'll have to track down where exactly he put it.

Do you have the Homeowner's Service Manual?  It's on the wiring diagrams
there.  For example, the E10M section shows it in the negative battery 
line,
after the voltmeter, between the key switch and CB-1 (motor internal 
thermal
breaker).
