(ET) Batteries for Mowers

I installed 12, 100ah CALB cells a few years ago. They work extremely well. I installed a new charger in the front along with a couple of dead batteries for weight.
No BMS. Be sure you never over discharge. I only had a problem because for a while I had a dcdc converter to keep a 12v battery used by my winch charged which discharged the CALB cells without me being aware.

I've replaced both small boards, made new clips for both, new microswitches in the throttle, new fuse board, 2 new reverse relays and new brushes in the main motor.
All this has given my tractor a new lease on life, but now I should be starting to research for a new set of batteries. Any suggestion regarding one brand/manufacturer over another?
Thanks,
Hank

The E15 is really being weird: Main motor is now giving me grief,
doesn't start sometimes but will start if I whack it with a wrench. I
see 38 volts at the studs, so I am guessing the brushes are out.

Drat. Parked it, will drop the motor next weekend or so.

Verify field control and wiring before doing anything
rash. ESPECIALLY if it is a Field Reversing control.

Trojan is considered one of the top brands, but they tend to be expensive.
I've had mostly good luck with US Battery, which are more mid-priced, in
road EVs.

I didn't get very good service from Johnson Controls batteries, but that was
over 25 years ago.

That said, an ET isn't a really high-stress application, certainly much less
so than road EVs, so I don't know that it's all that critical.

Yep, I checked that. Field is actually ok, problem is the motor itself.
Oh well, just drop motor, open the back, clean it out....

In the meantime I noticed one of the deck motors was clanking and
running slow so I opened it up. Yep, magnet came loose. Yep, magnet
cracked. Yep, motor go in trash can. I thought I had a spare large style
mower motor shell but it turns out I have half a dozen small motor
shells. Apparently the magnets come loose on the large shells, and the
armatures short on the small shells.

I wonder though WHY PUTTING IT IN STORAGE WRECKS MOTORS? I store the
deck vertically against the wall because I don't want it to rust
outside. But for the past 3 years now I have had to replace 1-2 deck
motors every spring. I have no clue as to why...

Maybe I should just leave it in the weeds.

I've seen brush holders corrode from moisture in my garage and barn during
winter storage. This caused the brushes to bind.

I suppose something similar - say, rust on the inside of the motor housings -
could be causing your magnets to break loose from the housings.

I've been wondering for a while how practical it would be to adapt motors
from 36v push mowers for ET decks. Examples:

http://www.ereplacementparts.com/motor-assembly-p-1106816.html

I'd be surprised if these motors were as stout and sturdy as the original GE
motors.

Now that there are a few 36-volt mowers on the market (Worx, B&D, Toro,
Earthwise, Sears), I'm thinking about waiting for a couple to arrive in
my life (due to dead batteries) and rigging up a front attachment to
drive those from an ET. (Currently I push a 24-volt hand-me-down relic
which just needed a better charger and 2 replacement wheels - still on
the original batteries which have 2004 stamped on them. But I don't
have much lawn to mow.)

Hi HankBuy Trojan T105 batteries and add a Landis controller.Check the web for the best price on Trojans. My Trojan pack is 7 years old and going strong. The Landis controller keeps the pack charger and eliminates the old style timer. Thanks,Paul Holzschuher?C-185
