I agree that a transistor controller beats a rheostat of any sort. I have an Alltrax and it's been a trouper. For the lights, you might consider mounting three 12v headlights across the grill and wiring them in series. Another possibility would be to fit a couple of 36v LED headlights meant for an electric bike.
