Because it's a tractor.  You WANT it to have lots of mass.  This is the
perfect application for lead batteries.

Well, I'm already running NiCDs and I love how they still have full power in the snow. And how they seem to be lasting, but that's another story. They are lighter though, which is a problem with the front end.

Lithium batteries are the current fad, and they have many applications, but
they're not appropriate for everything.

True, but as a test platform it could be a entry to see how they work. I think I'm going to give this a shot.
