Re: (ET) Chargers (and winch)

Nice write-up so far, Dave.

I put a winch with the same form-factor on my E-15, except I bolted it on the outside of the front casting.  I don't like the end sticking out past the side of the tractor either.

When I looked at your pictures I thought, 'why didn't I put my winch underneath like Dave's?'

Then I realized - besides the mower deck I use my winch to lift the snowblower and also the plow blade, and both of those require a sub-frame mount that the underneath position would interfere with.

But I wonder if there's a way to mount the winch diagonally, since you're using a fairlead?  Probably would be tricky, and still might interfere with the blower or plow bracket when in the up position.

Still I don't like the position on the front casting - I'm afraid it'll rip the casting right out of the tractor someday.  I still have fantasies about mounting it on the inside of the front casting, since with the Alltrax controller I was able to remove the big resistors above the charger, so there's room.  I'd have to cut a big hole in the sheet metal to let the end of the winch out....

I also use a webbing strap like that on the original lift, instead of a steel wire rope on the winch. Trouble is, it wears out going through the 'pulley' on the the plow or on the snowblower that increases the mechanical advantage.  I suppose the winch is strong enough to lift the blower without going through the pulley, but then it would be moving too fast as it came up or went down.

Looking forward to the rest of the documentation

best,
Joel

OK, I put up one of the restoration albums I have been putting together at the following address:

http://www.davesevs.com/E15restoration/step%2014%20major%20assembly.mht

It's a single file webpage that is bare bones right now, and has a lot of steps outlined, but you can scroll through to see several details of the winch setup.

I will eventually put the whole thing out there on the web. I noticed detailed chronicles like that are lacking at the moment. But while I have it on all 4 wheels right now, I'm working on different ideas for the field control board. I may change from the FW switch you can see in the pics. After that, it's the armature control board and then I just need batteries.

Any chance of showing us some pictures of your Gorilla
