(ET) Transaxle modification for locked differential

Jeff,

If you have a problem with one wheel freewheeling, one idea would be to take apart one of your spare transaxles (preferrably one with the worst differential pinion gears) and weld the two pinion gears to the bevel gear within the differential and this will lock both axle spindles together much like the serious off-roaders do in their rear axles.

Those off-roaders weld a peice of metal in place on the pinion gears and weld that to the bevel gear, so the differential is locked in place and one wheel cannot freewheel. The only problem with this is if you use your tractors more often on pavement or mowing, it will have a hard time turning on pavement (and wears out the tires quicker) or mess up the lawn wherever you make a turn.

If you do a lot of log skidding in a concenrated period of time, it would make a lot of sense to keep a dedicated transaxle with a set of tires and chains on that, and you could make short work out of swapping out transaxles for a couple days to do that task. After the first one or two times, it should be pretty easy for you to do it.

Matt

Problem is I have brilliant ideas that turn out to be difficult to
execute, if not impossible. that's why I do tech support. I used to be a
developer and I had too many dead end code paths.

You know what they say "Those that can do, those that can't provide
techsupport" ;-)

Jeff, I think a powered trailer is absolutely brilliant. As for loosing
steering, why not just put some weights on the front. The Elec Trak
weight box should slide right into the front like it does to the back. Bob

One of my planned uses for my E15 (if I ever finish it) is to use it to
haul cordwood out my woods and I'm wondering how the traction will be. My
only experience is pulling a 4x8 trailer full of cordwood on a rutted,
snowy dirt road and when the trailer got hung up the front of the tractor
would lift, I should have had the snowblower on there as a counter weight.
But what about if it was muddy?

Since it appears that a locking diff is not an option I had 2 ideas. I
have several spare transaxles and a couple extra drive motors. the
transaxles have the brakes still on them.

Since I'll have an Alltrax with a dash pot, what about going with cutting
brakes, that is a brake assembly on each axle, with a pedal on each side.
That would give you the steering effect and you could also brake a wheel
that has lost traction?

The other idea is even more unlikely for me to ever do with my lack of
time and mechanical skill, but... seems like it would solve both traction
and the tractor nose coming up. What about a powered trailer? If I put a
motor and transaxle under a trailer would I just fry my Alltrax if I tried
to feed both motors from the one controller?

The pushers I've seen in the past are just for pushing
http://www.mrsharkey.com/pusher.htm
http://www.jstraubel.com/EVpusher/EVpusher2.htm
and don't seem to have an issue with a normal single point trailer ball
hookup.
