As a rough rule of thumb, KW in == HP delivered, allowing for motor
(in)efficiency.
Thus, if the motor is rated 1.5 HP, when it is delivering that power it
will
consume about 1.5kW from the power supply. At 120 volts that is 1500
Watts
/ 120 volts = 12.5 amps.
That's about the practical limit for power from a 120 volt receptacle. If
you want or need more power, go to 240 volts. A 20 amp, 240v circuit can
deliver sustained power in the range of 3.8kW (== almost 4hp continuous).
Also remember that ICEs are rated at peak HP, but motors are rated at
continuous HP.
