Shims
are placed between the cotter key on the sector shaft and the sector shaft
support. This pulls the sector gear closer to the pinion gear.
personally, I use a spring 'R' clip
or hitch pin clip there for ease of trial and error adjustment.
The next procedure
is NOT outlined in any service literature. To increase pinion mesh with the
sector gear, grind down the pedestal that the pinion gear rides on. The hole is
deep enough that you do not have to worry about the shaft bottoming out. Hope

OK, I am in the process of putting
my E-20 back together after a complete tear down for a frame weld job. I
am having problems with the steering gears meshing properly and have heard
others talk about shimming them. My question is exactly what do you
shim? The large fan shaped gear is pinned to the shaft and doesn?t look
like it can be moved forward any. The pinion gear and the fan gear are
not close enough causing the two to not mesh properly and are causing me
headaches. How do I tighten this thing up?
