Oops, I forgot one:

4. There's a little "varistor/diode board" on the panel behind the dash.
What does it do?  Mine has several diodes, the ends of some wires that
someone soldered in and then snipped off, and something that at one time 
was
probably a varistor(?).  Now it's just crumbled remnants.  Might this have
something to do with the fact that my "power pulse" button seems to have no
effect (or is that a different can of worms)?
