But to get even worse.....- Really the best thing would be an ammeter for the deck circuit. It could even be marked with a 'normal' range. Higher readings would indicate bogging down, or stuck motor; lower readings would be cut-out motor(s). The shunt could be placed under the hood feeding a meter placed in a good spot.
