IF you can get the guy to put a charge on the batteries, I like using the load tester, as it simulates real world use. A bad battery will show up quick. Leave it on long enough to watch for draw down on marginal batteries.

The hydrometer is the 'official' check I guess, but it takes time and is messy - or I'm impatient and sloppy.....

Good question on that load tester, wondr if it's like mine - basically a big resistor that puts about 100 amp load on the batt with a meter that reads voltage. Never used it on deep cycle batts, just the hydrometer. and voltage check.
