That sounds like a good plan. It is possible that the controller is not linear, that is 1/2 "throttle" might not be 1/2 power. You could check that by hooking it up to 18v and then matching the speed of the motor with a similar load. The advantage, I assume would be that you would be pulling a balanced load off all the batteries, instead of draining only half of them when you use the lift. Also, be careful about the amperage rating, I have no idea what the amp draw of the lift motor is, but under a heavy load, it could be pretty high.

the lift motor is only 18v.  I think I've seen warnings about shortening
its
life running it at higher voltage.  you might check the archives...

I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on using this controller for
running the lift motor on 36 volts?  It is rated for 20 amps at 36 volts
