I have also have read, if you loosen the back mounts some but loosen the
front mounts way up so the motor hangs down in the front, then push the
motor as far forward as possible and tighten down the back mounts first 
then
the front.  The added leverage caused by the hanging motor puts a good
tightness on the belt....   Of course I haven't tried this yet because I
haven't had the time and the belt slip is not to the point that I can't get
the lawn mowed...  Maybe this winter..

How does one tighten the drive belts?

1. Loosen the 4 carriage bolts that hold the motor bracket to the chassis
(the tops of the bolts are visible in the 'floorboard').

2. Push the motor forward with some sort of prybar, length of wood, etc. -
Keep the motor staright in the chassis.

3. Tighten bolts while keeping the pressure on.

It's a bit hard to do by yourself, but possible.
