It's true that shallow discharges are better for cycle life, but you 
eventually reach a point of diminishing returns.  In terms of the energy 
the 
battery stores and releases, cycling about 50% is most efficient.

High charging rates are not necessarily bad.  In fact, research in the 
last 
10 years or so has shown that lead batteries ^LIKE^ high current charging. 
 
It's like alcohol in humans.  Booze kills brain cells, true.  Drinking a 
fifth of rotgut every day will shorten your life quite a bit.  But a glass 
or two of wine daily can actually lengthen your life.

If you watch the internal cell temperature, and stay below gassing voltage 
(very important), you can safely charge any lead battery as fast as you 
can 
discharge it.
