(ET) ET Mower Baffles

I thought I was the only who had a mower that cut better in reverse. I also had to repair the baffles when they became loose. Now, I wonder if I should have removed them instead.
My front mounted mower is closed on both sides and there is a rubber flap over the rear rollers. I consider it as a 'no discharge.' 
BTW, I am making new battery cables. Is '4 gauge' wire thick enough?
