They used large clevis pins. Took me a while to figure out they were
removeable - mine were rusted in pretty good. They are a close fit in the
mower chassis. The arms go on with washers (I suspect) and a spring clip.

There is no real solid method to stop side to side movement. You should 
have
a bracket that mounts in the front 'stab' mounts that does two things: The
mower deck hits it when you lift the deck up and it limits the side to side
movement. I believe there was a retrofit to add plastic wear sleeves to go
on the mower support arms to prevent metal to metal contact. Mine has them
and I think I saw it in a service bulletin, so it may not be on all mower
arms out there.
