RE: (ET) Popped shock

Chris,

It took me sometime to figure out how to compress the shock and drive the
new pin in. I findly figured out how to use my Hi-Lift, some times call a
Bloomfield jack to compress the shock. This jack can be used to stretch
fencing and in this case compress your ET parts! I put it on the floor and
used a board under the shock so I was able to drive the new pin in. Be sure
and use the right size drive tool to remove the old pin. Replace both
roll-pins as the other one will fail soon. Clean, paint and lube.

That usually happens when you back up with the deck over a stump or
something of the kind. The assembly was compressed and a 1" long roll-pin
was originally in the hole, holding the spring partially compressed. If
you
back up with something tied to the deck, you are pulling directly on the
roll pin. Rust also helps. Sometimes the pin comes out easy, sometimes it
is VERY hard to drill out. Replace with a roll-pin NOT a hardened
dowel-pin; the dowel still can break and it is much harder to get out.

So this evening while mowing I checked the deck and found that one of the
shocks that normally connect the deck to the tractor was in 2 parts. Not
broken, but it looks like whatever kept the inside of the shock from
sliding
all the way out is no longer there.

What keeps the shock together, and what am I missing?
