RE: (ET) Thermo Switches

Ralph,

This is a good question! I have had some luck removing the mower thermo switches and placing them on a warming plate. I use a volt ohm meter to see when they open. If you find one of the three that takes a lot more heat to open you might try turning the adjustment screw to see if you can get it to trip out at the same heat level as the other two.

The Wife got a digital oven thermometer for Christmas I plan on using it the next time I check the switches. In fact she says I can use it on the Elec-Trak. I always wanted to know the case temp of the drive motor. I over heated an E14 motor and burned out the windings because the thermo switch contacts were rusted/welded closed. I bought a new E15 motor from Bill to replace the PM motor that the E14 had. (Bill had a motor up-grade kit for this!) The E15 drive motor has a large thermo switch bolted to it. The switch has as an adjustment screw also. I used heat sink compound to help transfer the motor case heat to the thermo switch.

So, it's not easy to figure the exact heat trip level needed to protect your motors but you want to know they WILL open at some point! You never want to smell burnt wire like I did.

Any one else have any experience checking/setting these switches?

How do I check the thermo switches on the motors?  Dwight L. Hazen said they should be checked and it sounds like a good idea since my ET sat for the last 20 years.
