I like using copper tubing 2" or so long, crimped and soldered onto the 
cable ends (I coat the ends lightly with rosin paste flux before 
crimping, and use a propane torch).  Then I cover the splice with heat- 
shrink tubing.  

But it's really better to replace the cables if possible.
