one person I spoke with about ET parts mentioned he wasn't interested in
keeping his snow thrower because it was a single stage, so you are not
alone. I still would like to know whether the later models (the ones
with the chute crank hung from the thrower itself, not from the side of
the tractor) universally work better. I get that impression from
comments from a few people who own them.
I wonder how tough it would be to add that second stage. Isn't it just
an extra impeller in the chute? Maybe find a dead gas 2-stage snowblower
and scrounge some pieces?
