Re: Inquiry about bellringing lessons for high end tour promoter

Did we actually ever come to a decision on this?

I have a couple questions: How frequently would these tours come through?

In my opinion, our tower time is limited, so the 2 hrs on Saturday should be for improving the band, and the ringing on Sunday a performance for service-goers. I'm assuming that the primary function of these tours would be to raise money for the church (if I'm wrong about this, then I probably have more questions). While I realize the church is doing us a favor by allowing us to ring in their tower, we currently repay this by having a band that can ring their bells to the best of our ability. Would it be disrespectful to ask the church to provide extra hours for these special tours? Then maybe the church could negotiate a handling-lesson rate with the teachers providing this extra service instead of trying to set a price that would make the band happy.

If this is a rare (few times a year) deal, then maybe organizing outside time is excessive and too difficult. However, if it's happening at least once a month, then I stand by my above comments.

Secondly, Ed is right in that we should decide what our 'tours' will consist of. People seem to be suggesting demonstration, handling lessons, and a trip to the top of the tower. However, as a ringing friend pointed out to me, we could only let people chime the bells and call that 'ringing'. Maybe we wouldn't charge as much, but this would also take away a lot of the hassle in terms of safety, liability, amount of time, and making sure enough trained teachers are present. We'd be able to accommodate larger groups as well. Just something to think about. For whatever reason, I feel less strongly motivated to bend over backwards to woo paying tour-goers than I do to our friends, visitors, and potential new recruits that visit the tower.

I have been wondering about liability insurance ever since they started the Behind the Scenes tours.  Some of those people are literally crawling up the wonky stairs.  I have no idea whether the church compensated the woman who hurt her wrist by falling off the bench after she decided she needed to take a picture out of the side window, but they are planning to get benches that are more stable (environmental control, rather than presuming one can trust a stranger's behavior).   High-end people might expect to be offered more risks, which is why I made up the leaning out of the steeple window scenario, but I didn't stop to think about the "don't tell me what to do - I paid you" attitude.

We should also think about liability insurance for this. Having a
random group of high-end tourists (who probably have expensive
lawyers) walk up the tower and start ringing is very different from
bringing friends for free. We will have no way of pre-screening people
for how well they follow directions or what their physical condition
is. And people who pay large amounts of money to do something don't
like being told that they can't do it because they aren't behaving.
