Our room does have a telephone jack, so this is technically feasible.
Last time I tried there was a hassle involving the need for an MIT
account to which the cost of the phone could be charged.  We
succeeded by having the IAP office pay for it.  (The issue is not the
cost, but the fact that, at least in the past, MIT telecommunications
would not accept money but only an MIT account number.)

I think it is very much worth it to have a landline -- the cell phone
has always been a hassle.  Does anyone at MIT have contact with any
organization which could pay for the phone and be reimbursed?
