Re: [Tufts-Nu] Fwd: Seminar Jul 14

Hello again:

Here's the information for the seminar on July 14th.  We expect the seminar time will be approximately 1:30pm, but will finalize when we have travel plans for the speaker in hand.

Date: Monday, July 14th

Time: 1:30pm (to be confirmed)

Speaker: Quentin Buat (University of Washington)

Title: PIONEER, a next-generation rare pion decay experiment

Abstract: The electron, the first elementary particle to be discovered, holds a unique place in science as it plays a key role in numerous physical phenomena from electricity to chemistry. Its heavier cousins, the muon and tau are at first sight simple copies of the electron: versions of the same particle in a different flavor, governed by the same interaction rules. This fundamental principle of Flavor Universality is a centerpiece of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. PIONEER is a new experiment set to challenge this principle by studying the rarest decays of the charged pion. With this new apparatus, we aim to improve the rare pion decay measurements up to 15-fold over the current ones and probe the Standard Model at energy scales beyond the reach of colliders. Our experiment design benefits from past-generation experiments and employs emergent technologies in tracking and calorimetry. In this talk, I will discuss the physics case of the experiment, review its conceptual design and present the ongoing R&D effort toward building the detector for the first phase of the project.

Hello everyone:

Please put a pin in your calendar for an HEP seminar on the PIONEER pion decay experiment (see below from Hugo) on Monday, July 14th.  As we've had a number of neutrino seminars in the past semester which our collider colleagues have attended along with us, it's important that neutrino folks also be present for this one---so if you will be in town, please make reasonable efforts to be there.  (FYI: the message forwarded below was the initial inquiry, and so it sounds less definite, but Hugo has subsequently confirmed the seminar will be happening.)

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I have a collaborator that will be visiting on Jul 14. He would be willing to give a seminar on his work on the PIONEER experiment (https://inspirehep.net/experiments/2135315on) with which he is involved too, in addition of ATLAS.

He offered to make the presentation, but I of course want to make sure there would be enough people around to join. Would any of you be around and available that day. I know it is only in a few months, but planning earlier helps 😉

Of course, if enough of us can be there, I’ll send this to the students and strongly encourage them to come.

Cheers!

Hugo
