So you had a 3.3% difference in nominal voltage between strings. For a 
year, your rear strings have been draining themselves, while constantly 
charging the front string.  Ouch.

NiCd can withstand overcharging better than lead, but that's a pretty long 
overcharge.

I'm not aware of anything good likely to result from a situation like that.

Lucky you, to have that many spare cells on hand.
