That's fairly likely.  You might go to AWG 16.  I don't think that they 
need to be any larger.

I agree that 12 volts is too feeble, even though the motor ran on that for 
moving door windows in Corvettes.  Or was it Cadillacs?  Something GM.

My lift motor was happy for many years on 24 volts.  It raised the blade 
plenty fast.  In fact I wouldn't have wanted it to go any faster so I 
wouldn't have used 36 volts.  And decent bet that there was a reason that 
GE's engineers used 18 volts.  As always, YMMV.
