(ET) 3 - 12v battery setup

Gentlemen,I am wondering if, for the sake of expense, I could just put 
3-12 volt batteries in one of my Electraks. It is fully restored and only 
used to show at county fairs, etc. and thus only needs limited motive 
capacity. Seems easy enough to do to me.  However, I have no clue if they 
could be charged reliably/successfully with on-board charger?  Perhaps, in 
general just cut charging time in half?
What are you collective thoughts?MIke F.
