Another way to hold the stud - if there is enough accessible - use a piece of copper strip between the vice grip jaws and the threads.  If you don't have copper strip, thick solid wire can be hammered into a strip.

I have to get the connected wires off (I removed them from the cart at the other end) and have to resort to grinding the nut off which i plan to do in the middle of the driveway.
