I would guess that the bolt was loose. But as someone else said that
will get you going but you should probably match the batteries as soon
as possible. Otherwise they will charge at different rates and the
pack will go weird.
Can you tap a deep bolt into the damaged battery or ask a local
battery shop to melt on a new post (they should be able to do that,
it's lead)

operations are best done using the round automotive posts with clamps
since the threaded posts have a small contact area.
