As long as you were already at full speed in speed one, I don't think that 
bypassing speed 2 would be very hazardous.  

But I think a better strategy would be to pick a transaxle gear suited to 
the speed you need to go, so you can quickly get past the energy waste - 
which probably isn't as bad as you think it is anyway.

BTW, it's not that I don't think a modern controller improves the ET.  It 
absolutely does, and I like mine a lot.
