There is, but it blows up fast. A huge DPDT contactor would work, but I really think a circuit could be designed to not allow the relay to switch unless field voltage was flat zero. Easy to do for reverse, but not going back into forward.

Isn't there supposed to be a varistor or something to protect the relay
from this damage?
