Re: (ET) Another mower motor blows.

Not sure. I've had my E20 for about 20 years now, so I have gone through a lot of parts simply by attrition. That said I'll look through my box of garbage and see what I have. I think I have at least 3-4 tall motors with burned armatures and 2-3 fat ones with disconnected magnets.

I'll clean and sand that fat motor this weekend and use JB Weld plus some spreaders to hold the new magnet. Does the orientation of the magnet matter?

And I ordered a new motor to have a spare. Robert I can take the deck of yours, but I can't take the whole tractor. If Harold doesn't want it I can come down weekend after this one, pick up the deck, take the drive motor off it, and help drag it onto your trailer for the dump. Sad, but I don't have enough space and/or batteries. :-)

Maybe I’m just lucky but I’ve been mowing a bit over an acre a week since 1980 between (3) thin motor decks. As far as I can recall, I only had one motor fail due to bent armature (big rock) and one that shorted. Replace bearings between 5-10 years as needed. Brushes were never an issue.

I wonder why the huge variations from other users?

I've been looking at replacement deck motors.
I have used the Black and Decker 36v drives and they are still running (2yr - 1acre). Another deck has tall motors and the terminal insulation is failing. I could switch a couple out with HD fat drives but would like to try newer drives.

It seems the TORO 20" model #20360 uses the Ametek CPM-160.  About 970watts.
Motor + Fan + base+ blade,washer,nut = $245.87 from E Replacement.

The Neuton CE6 motor setup, Motor + Fan + base+ blade,washer,nut = $138.54.

Anybody have any experience with these mowers?

I'll check with the guys at work, Ametek-Rotron Lamb electric, build thousands of PM motors, many of which are used as starters and sit beside the engine.  I'm sure those guys have some pretty good ideas on which glues hold PM's in place.http://www.ametekdfs.com/dfsbrands/drivemotors/pmdc-motors <https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ametekdfs.com%2Fdfsbrands%2Fdrivemotors%2Fpmdc-motors&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cea47a1df57ea447d9aa908d5d0c6fbad%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636644475394115708&sdata=6uIikK05PGJI%2FNj%2BrWdT9fpi7PW5syJzMRGO927391g%3D&reserved=0>

Steve Naugler figured out how to reglue the magnets, I think. Somebody did, anyway, you should be able to find it in the mailing list archives.

Well, had the usual deck motor failure. This seems to happen every
    other
year or so with tall thin motors:

    Mows fine one weekend.
Start mower next weekend, tractor pulls huge amount of current.
    Blade is
    stopped.

Blade free-wheels, wiring to motor is smoked.

Take motor top off, commutator is burned, and armature is obviously
    shorted. Motor destroyed.

Any idea why this happens? The inside of the motor was dry, no
    problems,
plenty of brush. It's as if the laminates just decide to fail and burn
    everything up.

Now to buy some more motors, my supply is low. This never happens
    to fat
motors, they just have the magnets deglue and shatter all along the
inside. Once again no reason, is there a glue that will hold them?
